Janice taught jewelry making at New Life Centre – a place for under-privileged Chinese children

Located in Shunyi District, Beijing, New Life Center is run by 6 teachers as a Training Skills Centre for disadvantaged and handicapped children, who can live and study in this loving environment so that they can have the unique opportunity to complete primary and lower secondary education. Successful graduates enter technical schools to further their studies and qualify for employment. The Centre is supported by donations. For more information they can be contacted at newlife.centre@yahoo.com

"When we first arrived at the New Life Centre, we were a little bit overwhelmed as there were over 30 kids. A lady student of mine Elizabeth Feurstein volunteered her time to come with to assist. Other students have also helped the center by chipping in tools, beads and materials for making jewelry. The lady who runs the centre is an English lady name Ginny and I have the utmost respect for what she is doing for these kids."

"Me and Liz taught the kids first the simple basic way to make a necklace then followed by bangle and eventually they were making earrings and designing chokers on their own. It’s amazing how fast these kids pick up skills like these. Some of them already have very creative potential and with just a little guidance and materials, they can make very unique pieces. I plan to bring more of my own students (expatriate ladies) to this event and sponsor more materials and time to the centre to help the kids improve their skills so that they can make something good enough to be sold for a fundraiser." – Janice
